Why Be Thankful to God Always?

  • Ebenezer: Thus far has the Lord helped you -1Sam 7:8-12.  Every victory or any achievement you have registered, including the ones you cannot recall or are not even aware of, it is God’s mercy and grace that has helped you.  He has been your help in ages past and He is your hope for years to come.
  • It is an act of worship, recognition, appreciation, honour, respect, humility towards God, from whom all mercies and blessings flow.
  • God deserves it.  His profile speaks for itself!  His reputation trails Him!  He is the Almighty and All-powerful God.  He is the God of gods and the Lord of lords.  Rev 4:9-11; Rev 5:11-13; 1Chro 29:10-13
  • It is a good thing to be thankful to God who has been so good to you – Ps 92:1-2, Ps 68:19
  • It is the wise thing to do.  All who know how to praise God will find joy, righteousness, strength and favour in God’s presence – Ps 89:15-17; Ps 16:11b (NOG)
  • It is an honourable thing to do; as being grateful shows the quality of your character, hence to whom much is given, much is expected…  freely you have received God’s mercies, freely you should give thanks…
  • God expects you to be thankful.  In Lk 17:17-18, Jesus asked about the nine who did not come back to give thanks.
  • It is a debt you owe God for being so kind and loving towards you. Ps 118; Ps 107; Ps 136.
  • It is proof of obedience to the Word of God – 1The 5:18 In everything give thanks.  Eph 5:20 Always give thanks.
  • It is evidence of faith.  Been thankful, especially for things not yet seen and things hoped for, is proof that the one giving thanks has faith that God keeps all His promises and will watch over His Word to perform it.  Phil 4:6 instructs us to be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer, supplication with thanksgiving.
  • It is a weapon of multiplication and overflow – Jesus used it for 2fish and 5loaves in Lk 9:16-17 and so multiplied the fish and loaves, fed a multitude and had twelve baskets left.
  • It opens you up for more blessings, thus more reasons to be thankful.
  • It is a healing medication – Prov 17:22 (AMP) A happy heart is good medicine and a joyful mind causes healing…
  • And in any case, everything (the good, the bad, and the ugly) is working for your good, everything!  Rom 8:28 – We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God—those whom he has called according to his plan.  So, no matter how it looks, it is for your good!  Isn’t that just a relief, that God has worked it such that the gainful and painful experiences are for your good!  What a joy!  That alone calls for gratitude and thankfulness to God:-)
  • It is preparation for heaven!  Thankfulness is all we will be expressing in heaven.
  • The Bible enjoins us to be thankful because that is God’s will for us.  Obeying the Bible is sound and heavenly wisdom, because the word B.I.B.L.E means Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. And practice makes perfect.  You might as well start practicing how to thank God for all time! 1The 5:18.

There are uncountable reasons to be thankful to God but only a thinker can be a thanker.  The song writer says count your blessings name them one by one and it will surprise you what the Lord has done. Thinking, counting, and thanking tend to go together.  If you do not know how to remember past mercies then you are likely not going to know how to be grateful for current mercies, not to mention future ones!

How do I cultivate and sustain thankfulness?

  1. Learn from David; count your blessings always.  Recall previous mercies and miracles and draw strength from them.  Have a personal Ebenezer where you recall and ponder over God’s mercies and interventions in your life “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits” (Ps 103:2); 1Sam 17:34-37.
  2. Counsel and Train yourself to be Thankful – Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why are you restless and disturbed within me? Hope in God and wait expectantly for Him, for I shall again praise Him, The [a]help of my [sad] countenance and my God. (Psalm 43:5)
  3. Determine to be thankful no matter what –Phil 4:6B; Ps 34:1-10.
  4. Forget not past mercies and miracles – Deu 6:10-12 10 “The Lord your God will soon bring you into the land he swore to give you when he made a vow to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is a land with large, prosperous cities that you did not build. 11 The houses will be richly stocked with goods you did not produce. You will draw water from cisterns you did not dig, and you will eat from vineyards and olive trees you did not plant. When you have eaten your fill in this land, 12 be careful not to forget the Lord, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt (from sin, condemnation, sickness, poverty, failure, satanic oppression, etc.
  5. Draw inspiration always from the testimonies of others.
  6. See and accept God as a loving and faithful father – Ps 103:8-13.
  7. Grow in your knowledge of God.  Like Apostle Paul, know whom you serve– Isa 40:27-31; Dan 11:32; 2Tim 1:12
  8. Stop comparing God with yourself!  God is not your mate.  He is the father and you are His child.  He is God and you are human.  Num 23:19 (NOG) states clearly “El is not like people. He tells no lies.  He is not like humans. He doesn’t change his mind.  When he says something, he does it.  When he makes a promise, he keeps it.”
  9. Ponder/Meditate regularly on the might and majesty of God – Ps 8:1-9
  10. Have faith and confidence in God -Prov 3:5-5; Jeremiah 17:7-8.
  11. Know that unthankfulness is infectious.  Mind your inner caucus.  Mind the people in your immediate space.  Be careful who influences you.  Evil relationship corrupts good manners – 1Cor 15:33.  Do not allow unthankful people close enough as to infect you with unthankfulness!

In Summary

  • Live a life of active thankfulness to God.
  • For emphasis, spend your life being thankful to God always.
  • Use songs, instruments, dance, talents, endowments, words, gifts, actions, your strength, will, being, quality time and all, to show thankfulness to God.
  • This is the reason He created you.  God created you to give Him praise – Isa 43:7; Heb 13:15
  • Convince yourself that God deserves praise.  Surely the One who invented, authored, and created all things deserves the accolades, tributes, commendations, acknowledgements, and all the royalties that come from being the maker and owner of all things living and inanimate, visible and invisible!
